Anna Maria Island contains a gem of a city called Bradenton Beach. Hidden away on the south side of the island is this quiet beach filled city that beckons young and old alike. Bradenton Beach boasts a rich history full of Native American historical roots as well as Spanish discovery. In more contemporary times, Bradenton Beach has great sightseeing, dining and outing opportunities to keep any adventure busy!
History
Ancient artifacts have been on the island pointing to local Native American tribes frequenting the island up to 2000 years ago before Spanish “discovery”. Although they never settled the island as its soils were not conductive to their farming methods. The Spanish arrived to the Anna Maria Island in 1530, but the first permanent settler did not build their homestead until 1893. George Emerson Bean built his home on the northern tip of the island, an historic area now called Bean Point.
Bradenton Beach itself began to create its own identity in the 1920s with the establishment of a bridge from the island to Longboat Key. The city itself was first incorporated in 1952 followed by a brand new city hall built in the 70’s. And just like that this amazing city established itself as an integral part of the shining jewel that is Anna Maria Island.
